Potato chips were invented in 1853 by George Crum, a chef at the Moon Lake Lodge in Saratoga Springs, NY. The story goes that a dissatisfied customer (legend has it was J.P, Morgan, the financier) kept sending back his fried potatoes, claiming they were too thin. In response, Crum sliced the potatoes as thinly as possible, fried them to a crisp, and seasoned them with salt. The customer loved the new creation, and potato chips were born. Initially known as SARATOGA CHIPS, they quickly became popular and eventually evolved into the snack we know today.
