Prohibition

Prohibition
March 29th, 2024

Prohibition in the USA lasted from January 17, 1920 to December 5, 1933. Its aim was to reduce crime and corruption and improve public health. It did not achieve its stated goals and was ultimately deemed a failure. Instead of reducing society's problems, Prohibition led to an increase in illegal activities such as bootlegging, smuggling, prostitution and speakeasies. Criminal enterprises flourished as they took advantage of the black market for alcohol. Enforcement of Prohibition was challenging and led to a disregard for the law. It also resulted in a loss of tax revenue for the government because the legal alcohol industry was shut down causing public opinion to turn against Prohibition.
